Managing Helpcenter Categories
Learn how to create, edit, and organize categories in your Bugalou Helpcenter. Categories help structure your knowledge base for easy navigation.
What Are Categories?
Categories are the top-level organizational structure of your Helpcenter. They group related articles together so customers can easily find what they need. For example, you might have categories like "Getting Started", "Billing", "Troubleshooting", etc.
Accessing Categories
Navigate to Helpcenter in the sidebar, then click the Categories card. You can also click the back arrow at the top to return to the Helpcenter dashboard.
Creating a New Category
- Click the "+ New Category" button (blue, top-right)
- A modal dialog opens with the category form
- Fill in the fields (see below)
- Click "Create Category"
Category Form Fields
| Field | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Category Name | Yes | The display name of your category. When creating a new category, the slug is automatically generated from the name. |
| Slug | Yes | The URL-friendly identifier (lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens only). Auto-generated from the name for new categories, but you can customize it. |
| Description | No | A brief summary of what the category covers. Helps customers understand the category content at a glance. |
| Icon | No | An emoji icon displayed next to the category name. Default: 📄. Choose from 30 popular emoji suggestions or paste a custom emoji. |
| Display Order | No | A number that determines the sort order. Lower numbers appear first. Default: 0. |

The form offers 30 popular emojis to choose from:

You can also type or paste any other emoji into the icon field.
Editing a Category
- Find the category in the list
- Click the edit icon (pencil) on the right side
- The same form opens with the existing values pre-filled
- Make your changes and click "Update Category"
Deleting a Category
- Click the delete icon (trash can, red) on the category
- Confirm the deletion in the dialog
- The category is permanently removed
Category Card Display
Each category in the list shows:
- Name — the category display name (bold)
- Description — if a description was provided
- Slug — shown in monospace below the description
- Edit & Delete buttons — on the right side
Empty State
If you haven't created any categories yet, you'll see a message: "No categories yet" with a "Create Category" button to get started.
Best Practices
- Start with 3–7 broad categories that cover your main topics
- Use clear, customer-friendly names (avoid internal jargon)
- Choose descriptive icons that visually represent the category content
- Set display order to control the navigation hierarchy (lower = first)
- Always create categories before creating articles — you need at least one category
