Everything you need for great customer service — in one platform
If you've ever noticed a small green checkmark next to a business name in WhatsApp, that's the Official Business Account (OBA) badge. It signals that WhatsApp has verified that the account belongs to a legitimate, recognized brand.
For businesses, this badge is more than cosmetic. It builds trust, increases open rates, and reduces the chance that customers mistake your messages for spam.
In this guide, we explain what the green checkmark means, who qualifies, and how to apply.
There are three levels of WhatsApp Business accounts:
| Level | Appearance | Who Gets It |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Business Account | Business name shown (no badge) | Any business using WhatsApp Business API |
| Official Business Account | Green checkmark ✅ | Notable brands verified by Meta |
| Personal Account | Just a phone number | Individual users |
Most businesses using the WhatsApp Business API have a regular business account — their business name shows up instead of a phone number, but no green checkmark.
The green checkmark is reserved for notable brands — companies that Meta considers well-known and trustworthy.
1. Increased trust Customers who receive a message with a green checkmark know immediately it's a legitimate business. This is especially important for first-time outreach and broadcast messages.
2. Higher open and response rates Verified accounts see higher engagement because customers are more confident the message is genuine — not a scam or phishing attempt.
3. Your business name always shows Even if a customer hasn't saved your number, they see your business name and the green checkmark. Unverified accounts show a phone number until the contact is saved.
4. Brand protection The green checkmark makes it harder for scammers to impersonate your brand on WhatsApp.
Meta does not publish a strict eligibility list, but in practice, the green checkmark is awarded to:
Small and medium businesses rarely qualify initially. However, this doesn't mean you can't apply — and it doesn't mean you can't build toward it.
Important: The green checkmark cannot be purchased. It's awarded by Meta based on their review process.
Before you can even be considered, you need:
1. WhatsApp Business API access You cannot get verified on the free WhatsApp Business app. You need the WhatsApp Business API, which requires a Business Solution Provider (BSP) like Bugalou or direct access via Meta.
2. A verified Meta Business Manager account Your Meta Business Manager must have a verified status (different from the WhatsApp checkmark). This requires submitting business documents to Meta.
3. Two-Factor Authentication enabled Your WhatsApp Business account must have 2FA enabled.
4. Display name approved Your WhatsApp display name must match your actual business name and be approved by Meta.
5. Active phone number Your WhatsApp Business phone number must be active and in good standing (no violations, no spam reports).
If you haven't already, get access to the WhatsApp Business API. With Bugalou, this is part of the onboarding process — you connect your WhatsApp account and get API access through Meta's embedded signup.
Go to Meta Business Manager → Settings → Business Info → Verification. Submit the required documents (business registration, tax documents, or utility bills with your business name).
This process takes 1–5 business days.
While waiting for Meta Business verification (and before applying for the green checkmark), work on your digital footprint:
Meta looks at your overall brand presence when evaluating verification requests.
Once your Meta Business Manager is verified:
Alternatively, if you're using a BSP like Bugalou, you can request verification through your account manager.
Meta reviews verification requests manually. This can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks. There's no SLA or guarantee of approval.
If your request is denied, Meta may provide a reason. You can reapply after addressing the feedback.
The green checkmark is nice, but it's not required to run effective WhatsApp customer service. Here's what matters more in practice:
Use a consistent display name — A professional, recognizable business name builds trust even without the checkmark.
Maintain high quality scores — WhatsApp gives phone numbers a quality rating based on customer feedback. High quality = better deliverability.
Avoid spam behavior — Don't send unsolicited messages. Don't send bulk broadcasts to people who haven't opted in. This protects your quality rating.
Use message templates — Approved message templates for proactive outreach look professional and are less likely to be marked as spam.
Connect via a reliable platform — Using a professional tool like Bugalou to manage your WhatsApp ensures your account stays in good standing.
Can I buy the green checkmark? No. It's awarded by Meta and cannot be purchased.
Does the green checkmark expire? Not automatically, but Meta can remove it if your account violates their policies.
Does my business need the green checkmark to use WhatsApp Business API? No. The API works perfectly without the checkmark. The checkmark is a trust signal, not a requirement.
How long does verification take? There's no fixed timeline. It can take days to weeks, and there's no guarantee of approval.
The WhatsApp Business green checkmark is a valuable trust signal — but it's not a prerequisite for running effective WhatsApp customer service. The most important steps are getting API access, maintaining a clean account, and using a professional platform.
Start with connecting WhatsApp via Bugalou, build your presence, and apply for verification when your brand qualifies.
